Cloning is the method of making more plants by cutting stems from the parent plant to grow a new plant. The new plant will have the same genetics as the original plant generally called the mother plant. Some growers prefer to grow their new plants through cloning than seeding because they would already have an idea on how the plant will develop, what fertilizers it would need to maximize its growth and how to better take care of it in general. Most growers have marijuana clones for sale.
Cloning is easy to do. It can also be hassle-free because it can be done while you are pruning your cannabis plants. Pruning is part of the care process when growing cannabis plants. Pruning allows light to reach the flowers increasing the production of trichomes. In this article, we will discuss the different rules on how to clone marijuana.
Before we start the cloning process, be sure to have the following tools ready.
2. Rooting agent
3. Rooting medium
4. Grow Tray
6. Mother Plant
The tools above are essential in optimizing the growth of your clones. Once you have them handy and ready, you can now begin the cloning process.
How to Clone a Cannabis Plant
Each of the steps indicated below contains a few rules to be mindful about to ensure the success of your cloning project.
Step 1: Choose a healthy mother plant.
Choosing a healthy mother plant is a critical step in the cloning process. Having the ability to choose the right mother plant can spell victory for any grower. This process should not be taken lightly. For a wise grower, cloning should not be done on a whim. Careful thought should be involved and observing existing plants would be the key. A grower should start taking down notes at the start of the plants’ growth cycle to be able to determine which of the strains can be the mother plant.
A growers’ notes should include how long the growth took place, how much product has been produced, what is the flavor produced, what fertilizers or nutrients were introduced, what pests did it attract or not attract, the plants’ resistance to pesticides and other key observations the grower might want to add. They should be properly labeled and sorted so that when it is time to choose, it would not be as hard as not being prepared.
Step 2: Cut a stem from the mother plant using a sharp blade at a 45-degree angle.
Cut 4 to 6 inches of a strong stem from your chosen mother plant. At this point, the mother plant should already be at its vegetative phase. You can start cloning at least three weeks in the vegetative state. Choose a stem located at the lower part of the plant and do not use scissors. Scissors tend to crush the stems before actually cutting it which would hinder root growth. Remove excess leaves to allow the plant to maximize the use of its nutrients.
Note: Do not fertilize your plants for a few days before you start cutting or pruning. Fertilizers help the cannabis plant produce nitrogen and the nitrogen will let your newly cut clone grow more leaves instead of growing roots.
Step 3: Put the stem in a container with your preferred rooting agent
Rooting agents play an important role in speeding up the rooting process. You can opt to use water, soil or Rockwool. Let’s discuss each below.
As the name implies, water and a container are the only items needed to execute this method. You do have to make sure that the amount of light your newly trimmed stem is subjected to are controlled. Too much light will cause it to wither and dry out. If all leaves are gone, your plant will not be able to photosynthesize. With the water method, it requires very low maintenance. You can even go on a long vacation and still come back to a thriving clone.
This requires the grower to have a bit of knowledge of what type of soil the stem needs for optimal growth. Overwatering is a common problem with this and grower should not go on long vacations else he or she might come home to dried out plants.
Rockwool cloning makes transplanting your crops easy. The clones would also be able to grow roots fairly faster than clones were grown in soil or water. Rockwool can be bought in any gardening store and is even available to be purchased online. The biggest disadvantage of this method is that it is not natural.
Step 4: Get more cuttings as a backup in case of some dying out
Step 5: Gather all the clones and place them under grow lights
Step 6: When roots start to appear, transfer them to a bigger container.
Roots can easily be seen if you seeds are using the water method or rockwood method. For soil method, you would have to rely on the leaves and how much foliage is occupying the container. If the leaves are already going beyond the circumference of the container, it is already a good indicator to transfer to a bigger pot.
Step 7: Care for your cloned plants
Cloned plants will transition to the flowering stage earlier than plants grown through seeding thus extra attention is required from the grower. Also, cloned plants are extra sensitive to light so keep them at a safe distance away from harsh lights and light source should also be steady.
Advantages of Cloning
Still doubting cloning? See some of the advantages below. There are more advantages than disadvantages when it comes to cloning.
–Ability to choose from among the existing plants which of them has the best qualities
–Ability predict how the clone will develop and how long
–Choosing plants that are most resistant to diseases
–Ability to choose which grows plant grows the fastest
–More inexpensive than seeding
–Seeding stage is skipped thus shortening the plant’s growth cycle
–Planting can be sustained without purchasing new
It has been said by Aaron Justis that there’s so much product available in the market today that display cases cannot hold all of them.
Limitations of Cloning
Given that the clones are cut from one plant and shares the same genetics, should a disease affect one plant, it can immediately affect all and all your hard work will be null.
Marijuana clones for sale are everywhere because cloning is a cost-effective way of growing marijuana plants. It can increase productivity and can allow you to focus on a certain strain and be able to develop it to create an even better strain. The steps on how to create clones have already been enumerated above, all you have to do is follow them and apply your techniques based on the experience you will gain.
